Before glory
He was born in Barzan, Kurdistan Region. In 1975 he and his family were forced into Iran to seek safety from Iraq's Ba'ath regime. Having come from a family steeped in politics and activism, he went on to study politics and international relations at the University of Tehran. In 2008 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania.
About Nechirvan Barzani
Kurdish politician who has been serving as the second President of Kurdistan Region, Iraq since his election in 2019. He served as Vice President for the Kurdistan Democratic Party since 2010 and the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government from 2007-2009 and again in 2012-2019. He is founder of the University of Kurdistan - Hewler, the region's top ranking university.
Family Life
His grandfather is Mustafa Barzani, a legendary Kurdish leader and founder of the Kurdistan Democratic Party. He is the son of Idris Mustafa Barzani, a senior KDP leader and prominent political figure. His brother, Masoud Barzani, served as the first president of the Kurdistan Region. He is married to Nabila Barzani and they have five children together.
